Thursday, May 29th, 2003Sweltering in Kolkata, India.Hotter than JulyA lesson in toleranceOof! The hot weather is back — hotter, stickier, and more humid than before. It is so muggy, especially at night; you become so completely enervated that you are unable to fall asleep.
If nothing else, I can more readily appreciate the aptness of the analogy in verse 2:14 of the Bhagavad Gita:
matra-sparsas tu kaunteya
sitosna-sukha-duhkha-dah agamapayino 'nityas tams titiksasva bharata "Happiness and distress, like the appearance and disappearance winter and summer, is transient. Since they are all due only to sense perception, you just have to learn to tolerate them." What else can you do? You are forced to just stoically tolerate them. Still, I must say that I am looking forward to my trip to Johannesburg in a few days. South Africa is in the Southern Hemisphere, you see, and in the Southern Hemisphere it is now winter... |
