Saint Petersburg, Russian Federation

Four-Thirty Express

Back to Saint Petersburg

Ah, the old four-thirty express from Moscow to Saint Petersburg — I am getting quite used to this five-and-a-half hour commute! I'm on my way back to our temple in Saint Petersburg again, after spending two days in Moscow.

Now here is something unusual on this trip: we pass another passenger train. I grew up with trains (I used to ride to school every day with a quarterly season ticket) and I have already traveled quite a bit in Russia on the trains, but I don't ever remember overtaking another train traveling in the same direction...

As night begins to fall, I alternately read and drowsily watch the forests flit by my window. Every so often I see:

a rural village
tiny little cottages
a world of their own

By the time we reach Saint Petersburg, it has begun to snow. Until earlier this year, I had never seen snow (other than on a Christmas card!).
