Saint Petersburg, Russia

Weird Weather

Freeze/thaw seesaw

More snow this morning. Makhanchora Prabhu and Yasoda Nandana Prabhu do something that I have only ever seen done in comic books: shovel snow from the driveway.

The weather here has been rather weird: cold days followed by relatively warm days. Just before I left Saint Petersburg to go on a lecture tour of the Ukraine, the Baltic Sea began to freeze, but by the time I returned in November, the warmer weather had thawed it out.

About a month after the first tour, just before I began my second lecture tour, this time of western Russia, the sea began to freeze again. Although the sea — at least this portion of the Gulf of Finland that is visible to us — has been mostly frozen, there are still patches near the edge of the shore that alternately melt and freeze, depending on the weather.

What's going on? Global warming? Nah. Couldn't be. George Bush says there is no scientific evidence of global warming, and he would never lie, would he?
